Beyond Mentoring: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the goal of Beyond Mentoring?

Beyond Mentoring projects are short-term (20-30 hours, total), virtual experiences that can be completed remotely. We aim to help students acquire transferable skills, build meaningful connections with project supervisors, and work on a real-world project that they can add to their resume.

When can students complete projects for summer 2025?

Beyond Mentoring projects should last 20-30 total hours and take place over 2 to 4 weeks between June 1 and August 12.

Should I post my opportunity as a Beyond Mentoring project or an internship?

Beyond Mentoring projects are NOT the same as an internship in terms of scope. If the project you are proposing exceeds 30 hours, you should consider posting your opportunity as an internship on Handshake. If you choose to post your opportunity as a Beyond Mentoring project, please ensure that you do not reference “intern” or “internship” in the project title/description.

How many projects can students complete?

Each student can only complete ONE project to ensure that as many students as possible are able to participate in this initiative.

Who can be a project supervisor?

Project supervisors can be alumnus, parents, and other friends of the College.

Who can apply for Beyond Mentoring projects?

Only Barnard students can apply for Beyond Mentoring projects.

What are examples of possible projects?

We encourage true experiential learning opportunities for our students. Below are examples of previous project postings:

  • Market research for your industry
  • Social media plan development
  • Identify and implement strategies to increase website traffic
  • Clean and analyze data
  • User research for a new product
  • Review, proofread, and provide editorial feedback on content
  • Assist with fundraising initiatives

When proposing a Beyond Mentoring project, what does “duration” mean?

Duration is the estimated total number of hours required to complete the project. As a reminder, the project needs to be a minimum of 20 hours and a maximum of 30 hours

How are students compensated for a project?

Anyone who posts a project is encouraged to provide funding when possible. We are always grateful for the generosity of alums, parents, and other project hosts who can compensate students directly (or through their employer).

However, in cases where project hosts cannot provide payment, Beyond Barnard does have limited funding available on a first come first served basis. If your project is contingent on Beyond Barnard funding, please email amdye@barnard.edu and ask if funding is available for your project before creating your posting. To ensure that available funds can be spread out, where available, Beyond Barnard can fund a maximum of one student per project host.

What is typical compensation for a Beyond Mentoring project?

Beyond Barnard’s stipends are $300. While we don't have a minimum stipend required, we encourage hosts to meet that amount or higher where able when funding your own projects.

How can I view student applicants?

Project supervisors should log-on to your account, click on “projects,” “my posts,” choose the project title, and then click “view applications” on the right.

How do I hire the student?

First, ensure the student has not already been hired for another project. You will know if they were hired because you will not be able to choose from the drop-down menu next to the students’ name, and when you hover over the drop-down menu you will receive the message “this user has already been hired for another project.” If you do not receive this message, then you will choose “hired” from the drop-down menu.

**The student is not officially hired for your project until their status has been updated.**

Can I hire multiple students for one project?

You can hire a maximum of two students for the same project, however if you've requested funding from Beyond Barnard and it is available, Beyond Barnard can fund one student and you would provide a comparable stipend for the second student.

Can I post multiple projects?

Each host can post up to three distinct projects (please see above regarding stipend stipulations when funding is coming from Beyond Barnard).

After I post a project, what are the next steps?

Projects will be approved by program manager, who will contact you with any questions or points of clarification about your project. Projects will all be made live and marketed to students by Beyond Barnard starting on Wednesday, May 14. You are welcome to begin reviewing applicants and setting up interviews with candidates on a rolling basis or you can choose to wait until you have a critical mass of applications before selecting candidates to interview.

Who should I contact if I have an issue with my project (i.e. have not heard back from my hired student, my student has questions about the logistics of the program, etc.)

Always feel free to reach out to us with any concerns, questions, or suggestions. You can email Amanda Dye directly at amdye@barnard.edu
